Outdoor Education (Alpine) -
Practical Diary Jule Roehrich
Date: 25th
of August to 27th of August
Activity:
Cross-country-skiing
Our camp started on the 25th of August at the
school. Both Outdoor Education classes went together. We first had to go by bus
for a six hours drive to Mount Beauty where our accommodation was.
After we arrived we had free time until we had to be in our
cabins at 10 o’clock.
On Monday we met in the eating room at 6.30 for breakfast.
Everyone was still really tired but also excited for the snow.
After a very good and big breakfast we did go to get our ski
and boots and poles.
We had to go again by bus for an hour to get finally to falls
creek where we would be skiing for the next two days.
We got introduced to our guides Rob and Daniel who showed us
the main components of the ski.
Our first challenge was to get to the Nordic bowl. We had to
ski 800m to get there and that was one of the hardest things on the camp because
we didn’t really know how to ski.
I fell down very often until I finally got the hang of it.
When everyone was at the Nordic bowl which is a big area
with some small hills and a big flat place in the middle we learned different skills
of cross-country-skiing.
Five major skills are: classic skiing, snow plough (pizza),
double pole, herringbone and sliding.
The first thing that we learned was the classic skiing, if
you want to do that you are just walking with bent knees and when you put your
foot down you push it into the snow so the small grooves will grab into the
snow so if you go a flat hill up you don’t slight down again.
We did some exercises to warm up and then split up in
smaller groups. In my group we learned the snow plough what is also named
pizza. You use this to slow down when you go downhill so that you stay in
control of your skis. You have to bent your knees harder and put your ankles in
and form a “V” with your skis so they are against the snow.
We practiced that for a time by going down a small hill and
also learned who to go to the right and left. You do this with putting your
weight on the left leg or the right left, depending on where you want to go.
To get the hill up again we used also the skill, herringbone.
This skill is good for steeper hills to go up. You do the same like when you
are doing the snow plough, but this time with the end of the skis so that you
don’t slide the hill back down. You walk and push the ski into the snow but
with the sides of it so you can see behind you the lines.
We met again for lunch and to drink a lot, and that was one
of the most important things that you have enough energy to go on.
After our break we split up again so that the people who
wanted can go for a longer tour and the other one who don’t felt that safe on
the skis yet can stay in the Nordic bowl.
In the Nordic bowl we played some games.
At around 4.30 o’clock we were back at our accommodation in
Mount Beauty. We had free time and dinner and went to bed.
The next day started the same. We had breakfast at the same
time, went by bus to Falls Creek and where first for the beginning to warm up
again in the Nordic Bowl.
We split up in our two normal classes to do for the rest of
the day a tour. That was the hardest thing on the camp. The landscape was
really beautiful. After around two hours we were on the top of the hill. The
view was amazing and everyone was happy to have now lunch and sit down and
relax for a short time and also exited to go now downhill and don’t have to
walk up again like before.
The most time on our way back to the Nordic bowl we used our
skills of sliding and double pole and sliding. Just for the steeper parts we
used the pizza.
Sliding is when you just leave your legs and skis parallel
so you get faster. But the important thing is that you still have your knees
bent like always so you have a better control of your skis.
The other thing was double pole that is just that you push
with your poles at the same time so you also get faster.
This day ended a little bit earlier than Monday. We came
back at around 3 o’clock, then gave our ski, boots and poles back, get fast
changed at went with the bus back to the school.
All in all I can say that it was a great experience. I
already could snowboard and downhill skiing so it was really interesting to
learn something different. You also get
to know your body better and get to know how much you can actually do, what is
too much and to make decisions for yourself and not look what the others are
doing. I had a lot of fun not only while we were skiing it was also good to get
to know my class mates better. I had a lot of fun and I’m already excited for
the next camp.
